Ms g’s super_sonic_sound_squad
Ms G’s SuperSoundSquad is a set of four interactive art toy sculptures created in collaboration with students from the Texas School for the Blind and Visually Impaired (TSBVI). This work was commissioned by Touch the Art, an exhibition focused on sensory accessibility and joyful, multi-sensory engagement.
Each figure is a unique, abstract portrait of a student, paired with a small ceramic object they personally created—a star, a moon, a hand, and a teddy bear.
The Interactive Experience
The artwork intentionally breaks the typical art world barrier of "do not touch." The art toy format was chosen specifically for its accessibility, familiarity, and inherent invitation to play, making the work instantly engaging for all ages.
When a visitor places one of the figures onto a central platform, the simple act of touch triggers a sound activation. Visitors then hear the corresponding student's voice sharing a personal reflection on what art and creativity mean to them.
This element of tactile play and surprise transforms each sculpture into a personal, expressive portrait. Touch becomes the essential gateway to participation and deeper connection.
“Art isn’t just visual — when you include different perspectives, you get something truly powerful.”
Natalie Earhart, Co-Founder of Almost Real Things
As a sculptor, I am drawn to the physicality of objects and the ways we come to know the world through touch. The figures are not literal likenesses, but rather a cohesive "squad" representing the four TSBVI students I collaborated with, shaped by our time together. They invite curiosity, play, and a connection through the combination of touch and sound.
